Cross-border transfers need the right paperwork
Many river cruises begin in one country and finish in another. Legally, a border-crossing transfer is an international occasional service. It needs an operator holding a Community licence. Any local excursion in another country has to go on the journey form before the coach sets off. If your group adds an excursion in another country, tell the operator before the coach leaves, not on the day.
Typical cross-border runs
Vienna to Bratislava is about 80 km, 1 to 1.25 hours. Budapest is about 245 km from Vienna, 2.5 to 3 hours. Munich to Salzburg, in Austria, is about 145 km. Prague to Dresden is about 150 km. At those distances a transfer is a half-day in its own right. Driving breaks apply: after 4.5 hours at the wheel, the driver takes at least 45 minutes.
City rules apply at each end. A coach going up to Buda Castle needs a BABU permit. Vienna bans coaches from the Innere Stadt. Amsterdam restricts any coach above 7.5 tonnes within the S100 ring.
