Rome runs its coaches on permits. Get the right ZTL BUS permit for the zones you need and the Colosseum and Vatican become ordinary stops.

Getting a coach through Rome's ZTL BUS zones

Every tourist bus in Rome needs a ZTL BUS permit. Zones A and C are enforced at all hours. Zone B applies from 05:00 to 24:00. The permits have been online-only since 1 January 2026, so there is no buying one on arrival.

Why the coach stops short of the Pantheon and Trevi

ZTL BUS C covers the historic centre and is closed to coaches. Three exceptions apply: transport for disabled passengers, school trips, and hotels with 40 or more rooms. The Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain are both inside zone C. Plan to walk in from outside.

If your hotel has 40 rooms or more, tell us its name. The coach may be able to reach the door.

Rules for buses in Rome

Tourist buses need ZTL BUS permits: zones A and C 24/7, zone B 05:00-24:00.
Since 1 January 2026 tourist bus permits are sold online only.
ZTL BUS C (historic centre) closed except school trips, 40+ room hotels, disabled transport.
Colosseum permits include pre-booked parking and boarding areas such as Circo Massimo.
Vatican-area coach access is quota-limited every day of the week.

Colosseum and Vatican days

A Colosseum permit includes a pre-booked parking and boarding area, and Circo Massimo is one of them. Coach access to the Vatican area is capped by a quota set for each day, weekends included. Book early. When the quota is gone, it is gone. For the Baths of Caracalla, coaches park on via delle Terme di Caracalla, again by permit.

Fiumicino and the port at Civitavecchia

Fiumicino is about 30 km out, 40 to 60 minutes. Coaches load at stands 20 to 26 of the T3 Arrivals hub, next to exit 6. Follow the Bus Station signs from arrivals. Civitavecchia is about 80 km from Rome, 1 to 1.5 hours. The Fiera di Roma sits on the airport road, handy for exhibition groups.

Day trips that fit one driver

Tivoli and Ostia Antica are both under an hour. Orvieto is 1.5 to 2 hours. Pompeii is 2.5 to 3 hours each way, which leaves limited time on site once driving limits and breaks are counted.

Can I buy the Rome coach permit when we arrive?

No. Since 1 January 2026 tourist bus permits are sold online only.

Can the coach drop us at the Trevi Fountain?

No. It is inside ZTL BUS C. The coach sets you down outside the zone and you walk.

Where do we find the coach at Fiumicino?

Follow the Bus Station signs to T3 Arrivals. The coach uses stands 20 to 26, near exit 6.

Can the coach stop at the Colosseum?
