Coach Hire in Venice: Pass First, Then Plan

In Venice the coach gets you to the lagoon edge and no further. What happens on the road before that point depends on one thing: the ZTL BUS pass issued by AVM.

The AVM ZTL BUS pass decides your route

A tourist coach needs an AVM-issued pass on display to enter the ZTL BUS area. A coach with no pass may only transit, and its route is then limited to two roads: the Mestre bypass, and the road that links the airport. That is enough for a straight run past the city, and nothing else.

Inside the zone, a coach may stop in dedicated car parks and authorised boarding areas, and nowhere else. There is no pulling over outside a hotel. The operator arranges the pass for your date. Tell us early if your plan changes, because the pass follows the plan.

Rules for buses in Venice

  • Tourist coaches entering the ZTL BUS area must display a pass issued by AVM.
  • Without a pass, coaches may only transit the Mestre bypass and the airport link road.
  • Inside ZTL BUS, coaches stop only in authorised boarding areas and dedicated car parks.
  • Tronchetto coach parking allows 1 hour maximum; the People Mover runs to Piazzale Roma.
  • ZTL check-in points are staffed 06:00-20:15; outside those hours, buy the pass online.

Tronchetto, the People Mover and the one-hour clock

For the historic centre, Tronchetto is the coach car park to know. Coach parking there allows 1 hour at most, so treat it as a set-down and collection point, not somewhere for the coach to spend the day. From Tronchetto the People Mover carries you to Piazzale Roma, and from there you are on foot or on the water.

Plan the return the same way. The coach comes back to Tronchetto at a set time, loads and leaves. If your group straggles, the hour runs out.

Staying in Mestre or on the Lido

Plenty of groups sleep in Mestre on the mainland and go into Venice by day. That keeps the coach useful for evenings and trips out. Have the operator check whether the ZTL BUS area includes your hotel, because that decides whether the pass is needed for the hotel runs too.

Marco Polo arrivals and trips to Verona and the Dolomites

The drive between Piazzale Roma and Marco Polo is about 13 km, 20-30 minutes. North of the terminal is the PBus area, where commercial coaches wait. The controlled traffic zone at the airport has a 10-minute limit, but tourist buses are exempt from it. Treviso airport lies further off, about 40 km away.

For days out, Padua is about 40 km, Verona about 120 km and Cortina d'Ampezzo about 160 km, 2 to 2.5 hours each way. A coach with driver makes the Dolomites a long but workable day.

Can we buy the pass on arrival?

Between 06:00 and 20:15 the ZTL check-in points have staff. At other times you buy the pass online. The operator sorts it before the day.

Can the coach wait at Tronchetto while we tour?

No. Coach parking there is limited to 1 hour. The coach leaves and returns for your agreed collection.

Do we need a pass just for an airport transfer to Mestre?

Without a pass, a coach can only pass through, and only on the Mestre bypass or the airport link road. Whether that reaches your hotel depends on its address, so send it with your enquiry.
