Coach Hire Vienna

Since 1 May 2014, coaches have been kept out of Vienna's Innere Stadt. The Ring does the work instead: set-down points sit around it and the old town is a short walk in.

Working around Vienna's Innere Stadt ban

Coaches cannot drive in the 1st district. For St. Stephen's Cathedral and the Hofburg, use the set-down points around it. The card-free ones are Schwedenplatz, Votivkirche, Burgring, Börseplatz and Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz. Burgring is closest for Heldenplatz and the Hofburg.

Set-down hours and parking you cannot reserve

Most set-down points operate from 08:00 to 20:00, seven days a week. The ones at Grinzing and Westbahnhof are open 24 hours. An opera night at the State Opera that ends after 20:00 needs a different pickup plan than a morning tour, so tell us the finishing time.

Bus parking spaces generally cannot be reserved. Between drop-off and pickup the coach finds a space where it can. Leave margin in the timings.

Rules for buses in Vienna

  • Coach driving ban in the Innere Stadt (1st district) since 1 May 2014.
  • Card-free set-down points include Börseplatz, Burgring, Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz, Schwedenplatz and Votivkirche.
  • Most set-down points operate daily 08:00-20:00; Westbahnhof and Grinzing run 24 hours.
  • Bus parking spaces generally cannot be reserved.
  • An Advent coach plan covers pre-Christmas Saturdays; published each late October.

Schönbrunn, Belvedere and the Grinzing wine taverns

At Schönbrunn, the bus park is at Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 50 and holds 48 coaches. There are designated set-down points for the Belvedere and the Hundertwasserhaus. A late wine-tavern dinner works in Grinzing, because the Heurigen set-down there is open 24 hours.

Advent Saturdays and the Rathausplatz market

Every year in late October, Vienna publishes an Advent coach plan. It covers the Saturdays before Christmas. This year the Rathausplatz market opens on 13 November and closes on 26 December 2026. If your group comes on an Advent Saturday, wait for the plan before you fix the stops.

Airport and day trips

Vienna International lies about 18 km from the city, a drive of 25 to 45 minutes. Every passenger comes through two sliding doors into one arrivals hall. Near both arrivals and departures there are stopping and parking areas for coach operators. Bratislava and Melk are about an hour and a quarter or less. Budapest is 2.5 to 3 hours.

Congress groups at the Austria Center Vienna, next to UNO-City, or at Messe Wien by the Prater sit outside the 1st district, so the ban does not touch them.

Can the coach drop us at St. Stephen's Cathedral?

No. Coaches are barred from the Innere Stadt. The coach sets you down along the Ring and you walk the rest.

Is it possible to book a coach space at Schönbrunn?

Bus spaces generally cannot be reserved. Schönbrunn has 48 coach spaces.

Where do we meet the coach at the airport?

After the arrivals hall. Coaches use the operator stopping areas near arrivals.

Can we go to a Grinzing Heuriger in the evening?

Yes. The Grinzing set-down runs 24 hours, so a late return works.
